· Frequent urination: Women tend to use the restroom more when they are pregnant due to the growing baby putting pressure on the bladder. However, this is also a common symptom of a urinary tract infection.
· Nausea or morning sickness: The flaw in this symptom is that not all women experience morning sickness; it could simply be the flu or food poisoning. In fact, many women today do not ever get sick, or dizzy, or experience any type of issue due to the changes in their body.
· Craving weird food combinations: Well, your grandma said it best: "If she starts to crave tuna and ice cream, then she's probably pregnant". But, this can also be a sign of your body needing certain vitamins and minerals. It is not really a good sign or symptom to watch out for.
· Swollen and tender breasts: This is one of the main symptoms of being pregnant, and is often a good warning sign. However, women also experience this before their periods. It is the body's natural way of 'simulating' pregnancy. Not only do the breasts begin to swell, but they begin to darken the skin around the nipples or the areolas. This is due to increased blood flow to create milk. For the most part, the body will not actually generate milk until after you are pregnant, so this is one of the best signs too watch out for.
· Missing your period: The number one thing that is considered an early sign of pregnancy is missing your period. However, it is important to realize that stress on the body, frequent exercise, and poor health can also lead to missed periods. Know your own body; if you are on a cycle, and your body is rarely late, then missing your period is a fairly good sign to begin to take a pregnancy test.
It is very wise to know your own schedule. While you may miss a period, and just write it off as normal, some women experience an occurrence called implantation bleeding. This occurs between six to twelve days after they become pregnant and it resembles a very light menstrual period. If you do not keep an accurate menstrual journal of when your next period should come, it could seem as though it is late.
If you have a combination of any three or more of these symptoms, you could be pregnant. The only sure fire way of knowing that you are pregnant is to have a urine or blood test done by your doctor. So many factors come into play with the simple reasons listed above, so if you are unsure, always ask your doctor first.
