Food Allergies - The American Diet

After reading an article on Diabetes statistics in America it is no doubt that the American families are in trouble. We have to return to a diet of wholesome unprocessed foods. We must cook more and not use processed or packaged foods. Educating people on the dangers of the American diet is very important. I realize that some people have no idea that their diet can be the cause of most of their diseases and disabling symptoms.
The statistics said 1 in 3 kids will develop Diabetes. That's 8 out of every 24 kids. Over 30% of families are Obese. About 600,000 people die of Heart Disease in the United States every year. That's 1 out of every 4 deaths, that's too many. Too many when you consider it is avoidable.
For instance most people don't know that Gluten can trigger these unpleasant symptoms:
a. Stomach pains
b. Bloating and gas
c. Heartburn and reflux
d. Joint pain
e. Headaches
f. Skin rashes
g. Bags under the eyes
h. Fatigue
i. Insomnia
j. Brain Fog
If you have any of these symptoms you may have Gluten intolerance. The best way to find out is to stop eating it for at least a week to ten days to really notice if you are sensitive to Gluten. The good news is, there are a lot of alternatives to eating Gluten. There are breads and pastas that are gluten free and really are delicious. You probably would not notice the difference if someone didn't tell you. It has been a long time coming but the alternatives are now good and abundant. Thank goodness!! I am one of those people who is sensitive to Gluten. I can feel it the next day with achy joints in my hands and knees.
Dairy is a problem for some people as well causing some of these symptoms:
a. Allergies
b. Sinus Problems
c. Ear Infections
d. Type 1 Diabetes
e. Constipation
f. Anemia in Children
g. Bloating and gas
h. Stomach pains
Dairy causes digestive problems for 75% of the population. The good news again there are good alternatives. I think people who are allergic to dairy know it. The symptoms can be stronger and more defined than those of Gluten intolerance. I am taking about Irritable Bowel and symptoms like that can be very painful.
The next issue is Sugar. Sugar consumption is another startling statistic. The average American child consumes an average of 32 teaspoons of sugar a day. That's a lot of sugar. No wonder the incidence of Diabetes is so high.
In fact sugar is now the #1 additive found in most processed foods, yet it provides no nutritional value what so ever. It has been proven to be the main cause for the increase in obesity, diabetes and a list of 29 other diseases that are cutting down on the quality of life for a lot of families.
It all sounds bad but I think the solution is simple. Learn your own and your family members sensitivities. Be aware of your bodies reaction to certain foods. If you or a family member has any of the above symptoms try to figure out if it is a food allergy and then go from there. Not everybody has these allergies but if you do, a simple change of diet can be a great comfort.
Cook from scratch more, enjoy your food more, be healthier. Check ingredients on everything you buy but also live by the one ingredient rule when ever possible. Use only products that have one ingredient or as few as possible.
Just a little bit of knowledge and knowing that these possibilities exist is a big step to a happier healthier family.
